More Than a Prescription
What a Full Eye Exam Covers
A complete exam looks at how clearly you see, how your eyes work together, and how healthy the structures inside your eye are. Dr. Angeles checks your prescription, intraocular pressure, vision, and retina. We take time to explain what each step is for, so nothing feels like a black box.
You walk out knowing what your eyes are doing well and what to keep an eye on, in plain English.
Whole-Body Health Tool
Your Eyes Can Flag Whole-Body Issues
An eye exam can pick up signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune conditions, and even brain tumors before you notice symptoms anywhere else. The blood vessels and nerves at the back of the eye are the only ones an eye doctor can see without a scan or a needle.
If we see something, we tell you what it likely means and who to follow up with. We can coordinate with your primary care doctor in Wasilla or the greater Mat-Su Valley.

Real Time With Dr. Angeles
Dr. Raul Angeles, O.D., trained at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University and served seven years in the US Army Aviation before settling in Palmer with his wife and five kids. He sees patients of every age and explains findings the way he would want an eye doctor to explain them to his own family.
Common Questions
Eye Exam Questions, Answered
A vision screening, like the one at a DMV or school, only checks whether you can see clearly at a distance. A comprehensive eye exam is an entirely different experience. Dr. Angeles evaluates the full health of your eyes: the retina, optic nerve, eye pressure, focusing ability, eye coordination, and more. He's also screening for early signs of conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Think of it as a full physical for your eyes, and a window into your overall health.
Many serious eye conditions, including glaucoma and macular degeneration, develop slowly and without noticeable symptoms until significant damage has occurred. That's why we recommend that most adults have a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years, even if their vision feels unchanged. Catching subtle changes early is one of the most powerful ways to protect your visual longevity. For patients with diabetes, a family history of eye disease, or other risk factors, annual exams are especially important.
Dilation allows Dr. Angeles to see the full retina and optic nerve, structures that simply can't be fully evaluated without it. We use dilating drops that take about 20–30 minutes to take effect. Afterward, your vision may be blurry and your eyes more sensitive to light for a few hours. We recommend bringing sunglasses and, if possible, arranging a ride home. We'll always let you know in advance if dilation is planned so you can prepare comfortably. Some patients qualify for dilation-free imaging technology; ask us about your options when you call.
To make the most of your visit, bring your current glasses or contact lenses (including the prescription if you have it), a list of any medications you take, your insurance card, and any notes about symptoms you've been experiencing, even minor ones like occasional blurriness, headaches, or light sensitivity. If you've had eye exams elsewhere in the past, bringing those records helps Dr. Angeles build a more complete picture of your eye health over time. Most importantly, come ready to ask questions; we want you to leave with clarity of understanding and confidence in your care.
